Could the Future of Online Learning Really Be Free?

On Monday October 10th, Stanford University embarked on a radical new idea, offering their CS221: Introduction to Artificial Intelligence to anyone in the world, for free.

On campus students who register and pay will receive credit for the course when completed. Online enrollees will receive a “statement of accomplishment”  if they pass the course. The online section of the course is 10 weeks long and will be held to the same standards as an onsite course.  Presently, there are 145,000 students registered for this online class.

The inspiration for this course has been Salman Khan, the ex-hedge fund manager who quit his day job to stay home and create math and science video lectures. He has since “flipped the script” on the education system by delivering math and science concepts and procedures via technology.
