Chromebooks are coming...tell us what you think

Have you heard of Chromebooks? Is it a laptop? Is it a computer? Or is it a new way of thinking as we go about our work day? Watch how Google introduces it in this 1.5 minute video.

On Google's Chromebooks features page, they have several short video clips that show the advantages of using Chromebooks. With these units you get instant web access and are always connected to the web. You also have virtual access to all your apps, documents and settings, regardless of whether you access them through your Chromebook or all your computers using the Chrome web browser. There are several other short video clips on the features page and all of them convey the idea that Chromebooks are easy and rather fun to use. The question then comes up, what about using Chromebooks in business and educational settings?

Google has gotten some high powered companies to test drive Chromebooks. On their site they list six pilot customers: American Airlines, National Geographic, Inter Continental Hotels Group, Jason's deli, KIPP:, and Logitech. Not too shabby, wouldn't you say?

If nothing else, Google states on their Business & Education page that using Chromebooks in place of PCs could reduce total cost of ownership in both businesses and educational settings. Chromebooks and the management console automate or eliminate many common, time-intensive IT tasks like machine image creation, application distribution, patching, and upgrades. Additionally, there is no need to purchase licenses for anti-virus, data encryption or data back-up software. Subscription pricing means that you only pay a low monthly amount.

Write back and let us know what you think of the possibility of using Chromebooks in the classroom. We'd love to hear from you.
